Road Trouble

Have you never had an accident? Have you never violated the traffic rules like overtaking from the wrong side, not fastening a seat belt or crossing your speed limit?

Do you always want to be known as a reckless, terrible driver or would you rather like people feel safe with you behind the wheels? Here are a few tips to become a safe and sane driver.

 The leftist approach
If you are driving at a snail’s pace, for God’s sake do not drive in the middle of the road. Apart from causing inconvenience to other vehicles, you will also get rude remarks and dirty looks. Stick to the left of the road if you are not in a hurry.

  Keep your eyes open
If a car is stationed at the side of the road with a driver inside, do not try to drive past it in haste. Maybe, he is starting the car and planning to drive on.

  Give a break
By braking hard time and again, what are you proving and to whom? If you are at a high speed and want to stop immediately, give the pedal a deep push; then release it for a second or two. Also use the indicator.

  At an arm’s length
Maintain a distance. It is not wise getting too close to a swerving car. The guy in front of you may be showing off but you keep your cool.

  Bullies all
Heavy vehicles such as trucks, city buses are usually not traffic savvy. If they honk and honk for you to speed up just let them pass. You want to stay alive, right?

  Lights on
Do not make the mistake of not turning on your car lights till it is really dark. The twilight, often, is problematic as traffic cannot be seen clearly in fading light. Remember to keep the beam low with dippers on. It helps in visibility.

  Watch those eyes
If it is glaring sunlight then wear sunglasses. If you come out of a lighted building into the dark, wait for a few minutes for your eyes to adjust and then get behind the wheels.

  Being followed
If you think someone is following you, drive to a safe spot – petrol pump, a shop or a restaurant. Flash your light, honk that horn but never get out of your car. This will help you gather a crowd and chase away the harasser.
